Akio Toyoda is best known for being the CEO and president of Toyota Motor Corporation. However, he is also the auditor for Toyota Boshoku Corporation, the senior adviser for Toyota Media Service Corporation, and the president of Hitachi Ltd. and Honda Motor Co. He has guided his family’s business through the global recession, and Toyota is now one of the largest automobile manufacturers by sales. He is in favor of making cars powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology rather than by batteries.

Toyoda graduated from Keio University with a degree in law and Babson College with an MBA. He started working for his family’s business in 1984 and joined its board in 2000. In 2005, he became Executive Vice President, and in 2009, he became President. The company has surpassed Volkswagen with revenues of $228 billion under Akio’s leadership, and its performance has continued even through the 2011 tsunami and earthquakes.

Akio’s father, Shoichiro, was Toyota’s Chairman from 1992 to 1999 and the Japan Business Federation’s Chairman from 1994 to 1998. In 1952, he started working for his father’s business, and by 1962, he was the Managing Director.

In 1967, Shoichiro was promoted to Senior Managing Director, in 1972 to Executive Vice President, and in 1981 to President of the company’s marketing organization. In 1982, he started Toyota Motor Corporation and became the company’s first president. From 1992 to 1999, when he became the company’s Honorary Chairman, he held the position of Chairman.

Shoichiro Toyoda’s wife and Akio’s mother are Hiroko Mitsui. There isn’t a lot known about her.
